There are few animals that across the United States, whether you are a city dweller or reside in the country that are well recognized. It’s your neighbor the squirrel. Anybody that has a lawn or took their lunch to the park has come face to face with them. They ought to be out there eating their natural food instead of part of our sandwich. More than a few times I have been left scratching my head thinking how did they do that?!? If you have ever had a bird feeder, then you have battled wits’ with a squirrel. Don’t take it personal… after all they do not have T.V. or pc. They are smart, agile, and quick you’ve got to be on your toes when coping with a squirrel. There has been many a disagreement about the best way to keep them from things they desired in! As we figure out a way to put the seed out they figure out a way to get to the seed. But, in their defense, their 4 front teeth are constantly growing so they must nibble all of the time to keep their teeth from growing too big. Otherwise they can’t crack nuts or eat properly. We’ve rehabbed squirrels for over a decade and they still keep us on our toes and thinking. When they’re presented with a challenge you can just see their small wheels turning at high speed and… BAM! They have a plan and are on the move.
More than 200 species of squirrels span across the globe on every continent with the exception of Australia. Those 200 species fall into three major groups; Tree or Fox Squirrels which make nests in trees, Ground Squirrels which nest in tunnels under rocks, and Flying that occasionally appear to live more like birds… high up in the trees.
Here in Colorado, mother Tree Squirrels will have her infants in either February or August. It depends on her and environmental factors. She’ll pick a warm safe place and fill it with leaves, inner bark, along with other soft things. After all who knows what Colorado weather will have in store for them? She will have 2-8 infants. At about 3 weeks their eyes and ears open.
It will take 8-10 weeks for mom to completely wean them. When rehabbing squirrels it requires until around 10-12 weeks for us to completely have them weaned. They are fed all natural meals (we hide around cage while they’re hiding in nest box) so they may be released back into the wild. Bat Removal Company. Whether the young squirrel resides with their “actual” household or with our surrogate family it will be 2-3 months for them to go out by themselves.
Squirrels have a basic diet that they all will eat. Other insects, corn, many different vegetables, and plants are all on the primary diet, however, the diet also changes on location. For example a squirrel that resides in a tree in your backyard will consume more succulent seeds compared to squirrel that lives in the country.
